Countrywide:

•Sow hardy summer annuals like asters, Campanula, nasturtiums and plox.

•Bulb season is starting. Buy bulbs like anemone and ranunculus and store them until March.

•Start planting Gladiolas-, Lachenalia, Veltheimia and Amaryllis-bulbs.

•Prune Hydrangeas, pargoniums. Make cuttings of fuchsias, malva’s, heliotrope, hydrangeas and sage.

•Regularly spray against pests and diseases. Start treating conifers (at the end of the month) against cypress lice by treating the roots every 14-28 days with Wonder Aphicide or granule insect killer.

•Feed summer vegetables and transplant the seedlings of winter vegetables.

•Start a compost heap.

•It is now a good time to start planting new trees.

 

Winter Rainfall Areas:

•Towards the end of the month, start sowing seeds for Scottish Marigold, Iceland Poppies, Dorotheanthus bellidiformis (Bokbaaivygies), Lupins, Pansies, Violets, Sweet Peas and butterfly flowers.

•Thoroughly water plants in warm, dry weather, especially azaleas and camelias.

•Give all fruit trees their last batch of fertiizer.

•Sow vegetables like beetroot, broccoli, brussel sprouts, carrots, celery, lettuce, leeks, onion, parsley, radish, spinach and turnips.

 

Dry Continental and Highveld Summer Rainfall Areas:dahlias resize

•Start planting Scottish Marigold, Iceland Poppies, Dorotheanthus bellidiformis (Bokbaaivygies), Lupins, Pansies, Violets, Sweet Peas and butterfly flowers.

•Lift and divide large agapanthus’ roots.

•Water chrysanthemums and dahlias and feed them for a beautiful autumn show.

•Collect seed from summer flowering annuals towards the end of the month.

•Give all fruit trees their last batch of fertilizer after the last vegetables were harvested.

•Sow vegetables like beetroot, brussel sprouts, carrots, turnips, leeks, lettuce, onions and radish.

 

Subtropical:

•Sow Iceland Poppies, Dorotheanthus bellidiformis (Bokbaaivygies), Lupins, Pansies, Marigold, Petunias, Sweet Peas and violets towards the end of the month.

•Fertilize Litchis, papaya and Pineapples.

•Water Pecanut Trees thoroughly once a month.

•Sow vegetables like beetroot, broccoli, brussel sprouts, carrots, celery, eggplant, onions, peppers, radish, tomatoes and turnips.

 

Moderate Summer Rainfall Areas:

•Sow Scottish Marigold, Iceland Poppies, Pansies, Dorotheanthus bellidiformis (Bokbaaivygies), violets and Sweet Peas at the beginning of the month.

•Deadhead dry flowers to prolong flowering.

•Prune pelargoniums and make cuttings from the twigs you cut off.

•Protect hostas agains snails.

•Sow vegetables like beetroot, brussel sprouts, carrots, celery, leeks, lettuce, onions, peas, radish and turnips.
