This is where it is most expensive to build a home

Where are homes the most expensive to build and what housing type is priciest? The answer might surprise you.

Nationally, it costs an average of R8,163/m² to build flats, followed by office space (R8,092/m²), shopping space (R7,364/m²), townhouses (R6,802/m²), and free-standing houses (R5,932/m²).

KwaZulu-Natal is most expensive on a cost per square metre basis to build a freestanding house, according to building plans passed by municipalities in 2015. In fact, residential construction (including townhouses and flats) is also most expensive in that province. Commercial construction, however, is most expensive in Gauteng.
