Ask a lawyer – Why do I need to pay clearance fees four months in advance?
Is it normal when selling a house for the transfer attorneys to demand an advance payment of R8,400 for the municipality account? The accounts are all paid up and there is no outstanding amount. Why should we pay for four months in advance? – JoAnn
Hi JoAnn, I confirm that council does provide rates clearance figures four months in advance. You can estimate the amount to be your monthly account x 4.
In my own practice I first apply and obtain the figures and send the figures to the clients to view and make payment thereof.
I recommend you request a copy of the figures first before you make payment to the attorneys.
