Houghton, north of Johannesburg is fast becoming a favourite amongst high-end property buyers, thanks to its central and convenient location, and reputation for being a glamorous and cosmopolitan suburb.
Rory O’Hagan, CEO of the Luxury Portfolio division of Chas Everitt International said that the renewed interest in the suburb is mostly due to the rejuvenation and investment in the suburb over the past few years.
“Houghton now offers quite an astonishing variety of homes, making the leafy, peaceful surroundings attractive to more buyers,” explained O’Hagan. “These include high-security cluster homes built on subdivisions of some of the original very large properties and ultra-modern apartments that look out over the Houghton Golf Course, as well as mansions offering magnificent views from Houghton Ridge and some lovingly-restored originals and historic landmarks like The Cullinan House that we recently sold.”
According to O’Hagan prospective buyers are most charmed by the suburb due to how multicultural and inclusive it is, the fact that Houghton is home to top schools, and close to both the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg.
The suburb’s ease of access and convenient proximity to Sandton, the Gautrain link to OR Tambo International Airport, and other world-class shopping, business, and entertainment amenities are other factors making it extremely attractive do the discerning high-end buyer.
“Many affluent buyers are opting to leave the upmarket security estates on the outskirts of the city and return to heritage suburbs such as Houghton,” concluded O’Hagan. “Consequently, homes here are increasingly desirable and in short supply. Prices are rising and those who buy now will be making an astute investment.”
