#AskaLandscaper – What tree is this seed pod from?

Hi there, we were walking our dog in Die Wilgers in Pretoria and came across these seed pods. What tree is this from? Thank you – Ryno

Hi Ryno, the images are of a tree called Moreton Bay Chestnut or Black bean; Latin name: Castanospermum australe, it is the only species in the genus Castanosperm. It is native to the East coast of Australia and to the Pacific Islands. The tree is spectacular in flower as the tree comes alive with thousands of yellow and orange flowers. Thanks for sharing this, the species is particularly popular in Pretoria so you’ll probably come across more on your regular dog walks.
