Who doesn’t like being right and feeling like you know everything? But here’s the interesting news – you probably do some of the things you do regularly, wrong. The good news is that you are never too old to learn, and changing the way you do these six things will make a noticeable difference.
Cutting a round cake
If you’ve been cutting your round cakes in triangles your whole life, you’ve been doing it wrong. Alex Bellos, writer and mathematician, recommends a different way to cut the cake that will help to keep the rest of the cake fresher for longer. You need to start by cutting one long rectangular piece down the middle of the cake at a time; you can then push the 2 halves or 4 quarters back together again this way it will stay fresh.
Taking a nice hot shower in winter
We should all do our best to use water sparingly but this is not the only reason to avoid lenghtly, although enjoyable, hot showers in winter; too long and too hot showers will dry out your skin. Keep your shower short and get a good moisturizer to apply as soon as you get out.
Cutting your fingernails
When looking at your nail clipper you will see that they have a subtle curve. You could be forgiven for thinking that this means you can cut your nail in one snip but this is not actually the point of the curve. You should start at the one end and move to the next by doing a few small snips. Three or four snips should be your aim.
Top tip: Leave a little bit of white growth at the end of each nail this will protect your fingertips against infections.
Holding the steering wheel
When learning how to drive they teach you that you should keep your hands at the 10 and 2 positions on the steering wheel because this will help you keep control of the car. What you might not know is that it is better to keep your hands at the 9 to 3 position; this way your hands will avoid the airbags in the event of an accident.
You probably think scrambled eggs make the perfect on-the-go breakfast because it takes just a minute to prepare, right? If you want dried out scrambled eggs, yes it will only take a minute. But what you should do is whisk the eggs together in a separate bowl, then use some butter in a non-stick pan and cook the eggs over medium low heat. Remove the pan from the heat when it looks like it is almost done and then leave for 1-2 minutes; it will continue to cook in the pan.
Cleaning your ears
Using cotton swabs to clean your ears isn’t actually a good idea because you need some wax in your ears to protect your ear canal from water getting in and getting stuck. You should also try not to push the swabs in too deep because you won’t actually be cleaning all of the wax out you will be pushing most of it deeper in and this can damage your eardrums.
